This blog is for intermediate – advanced adult learners of English as a Foreign or Second Language.
Hello, my name is Irena Dewey. I’m an ESL instructor who has taught adult students in California, USA, for over 20 years. I’m also the creator of an instructional website usconversation.com. This blog is intended to be an extension of the materials of the website.
The blog will have three essential parts: Fun with Language, Tips and Tricks, Culture.
Fun with Language is the place where we will…..well, have fun with English! Jokes, images, pictures, amusing stories – we’ll have a lot of this. I consider humor a powerful insight into the life of any nation and any culture. It takes a lot of time to get to the point in a process of foreign language learning, when you can “dig it” – understand the slang and humor in the target language. So this section will be devoted to the fun and funny side of modern American English.
Tips and Tricks is the place where we’ll share out experience related to teaching and learning English. After more than 20 years of teaching, I’ve accumulated quite a few of bits of advice as to how to REALLY learn this language.
Culture is not only clothing and holidays, it is the way people think and behave in a particular culture. When we communicate with people from other cultures, we might understand WHAT they’re saying, but we don’t understand WHY? What is more, on many occasions, people say one thing, but mean something completely different. So, how is a visitor or a new immigrant supposed to navigate all that? We’ll discuss these issues here.
